METRIC CONVERSION

The process of changing measurement from one metric unit to another within the international system of units (S.I) is known as metric conversion in physics.

The decimal system, with all units based on multiples of ten, provides a consistent and widely recognised foundation for measures in science and daily life. This approach makes unit conversion simple.

Metric conversions are an important component of physics.Metric conversion can be done using a conversion table, a calculator, or by hand. These metric conversions are used to measure physical occurrences as well as to develop and evaluate physical hypotheses.Physics would be a considerably less exact and productive subject without metric conversion.

Solved Examples (Step-by-Step)Example 1 (Method-1: Moving decimal point)

Convert 4.25 km to cm.
Solution:
km → m (×1000) → cm (×100) ⇒ total ×100,000
4.25 × 100,000 = 425,000 cm ✅

Example 2 (Method-2: Using prefix powers)
Convert 350 mg to kg.
Solution:
milli = 10⁻³, kilo = 10³ → difference = 10⁻⁶
350 × 10⁻⁶ = 3.5 × 10⁻⁴ kg ✅

Example 3 (Area conversion)
Convert 5 cm² to m².
Solution:
1 cm = 10⁻² m ⇒ 1 cm² = (10⁻²)² = 10⁻⁴ m²
5 × 10⁻⁴ = 0.0005 m² ✅

Example 4 (Speed conversion)
Convert 90 km/h to m/s.
Solution:
90 × (1000/3600) = 90 × (5/18) = 25 m/s ✅

Common Exam Mistakes & Warnings Box (High CBSE relevance)

⚠️ Common CBSE Exam Mistakes

  • ❌ Forgetting area/volume conversion: 1 m² = 10⁴ cm² (NOT 100 cm²!)
  • ❌ Mixing milli (10⁻³) and micro (10⁻⁶): 1 mA = 0.001 A, but 1 μA = 0.000001 A
  • ❌ Wrong decimal shift direction: km → m multiply by 1000 (move decimal right)
  • ❌ Not using scientific notation: 0.000025 s = 2.5 × 10⁻⁵ s (CBSE prefers this!)
