Torque and examples- FAQ

Torque is a twisting force that acts on an object that produces rotation of an object and is given by the cross product of position vector and the force vector.

EXAMPLES :

  • Opening/closing the door-

The easiest way of  thinking of a torque is to consider a door. The easiest way to open a door is to exert a force on the extreme side of the door opposite to the hinges and push/pull the door with a force  perpendicular to the door.

  • Using wrench-

When we apply force to the handle of a wrench, the applied force creates a torque on the lug nut, which tends to turn the lug nut.More torque can be applied by adding more weight or by using a longer wrench,

  • To control and stabilize aircraft-

TORQUE: Torque is a twisting force that produces the rotation of an object. The torque causes an aircraft to rotate. Aeronautic engineers use torque generated by aerodynamic surfaces to stabilize and control aircraft.

CENTER OF GRAVITY (C.G): The average  location of the weight  of an airraft is the center of gravity.(As shown in the image), It is the point at which the total weight of all the items which make up the body may be considered as concentrated. AERODYNAMIC FORCES: The control surfaces produce aerodynamic forces, and these forces are applied at some distance from the center of gravity of the airplane.MANEUVERS &TRIMMED: During the maneuver, an aircraft rotates about its centre of gravity. To trim the aircraft, it is necessary to balance the torques, and there is no rotation about the center of gravity.
